Get nervous ripping open your electricity bill? There is no denying energy prices are rising, but this doesn’t mean you lose the power. It’s getting easier (and more affordable) to build technology into your home design. The modern two story home is peppered with smart home devices to make it as self-sufficient as possible.
This year, we’re seeing appliances truly integrating with iOS, being controlled through our smartphones. Soon, not only will our laptops and smartphones link to the internet, but everything else – lights, clocks, door bells, windows, hot water heaters, cooking utensils…
Just imagine this, for a moment. Home automation is the way of the future. There are many smart devices on the market to help you control different parts of your home. Here are a few of our favorites:
A digital assistant
It looks (and performs) like a Bluetooth speaker but it serves as a Siri or Google Now for your home. Ask your ‘assistant’ the weather, browse the internet, play music, set alarms, and schedule events in your calendar. The Amazon Echo is one example of this smart device.
The automatic turn-off device
This product plugs into an existing AC outlet, connects to a WiFi network, and turns on and off anything that’s plugged into them, through a corresponding app. If you think one of your appliances is using loads of power, you can turn it off once it reaches a certain daily limit. Check out the Belkin WeMo Switch.
The robotic vacuum
Roomba 980 is a semi-autonomous robot vacuum that you can set to clean at specific times. ‘Saturday at 9.00am’, and you’ll see it working in the corner of your eye at the start of every weekend.
The fridge camera
Got home from work and stuck on what to cook? FridgeCam ‘spies on your fridge’ and suggests what you should make using custom food-recognition software. Based on what you have, FridgeCam will offer recipes and prevent food wastage. Eating in has never been easier.
The Wi-Fi cooker
Staying in the kitchen, there’s a new cooker that uses a Wi-Fi connection to control that sweet Sunday roast. No more trips to the kitchen to check on it. With this device, you can control it from anywhere, even if you’re at home. Set the temperature and check the app while you’re out at coffee with your friends. Anova Culinary Precision Cooker is one example.
